Festuco-Brometea: Festucetalia valesiacae p., Helictotricho-Stipetalia, Onosmetalia, Thymo-Hyssopetalia; Cleistogenetea squarrosae: Stipetalia krylovii, Festucetalia lenensis, Stipetalia sibiricae, Thymetalia gobici
Primary and secondary steppes, formations dominated by medium or tall perennnial tuft-forming grasses or suffrutescents, with lacunar ground cover, together with their associated therophyte communities; typical formations, with two periods of dormancy, in large part climactic, accompanied by an Irano-Turanian cortčge, are characteristic of a steppe belt in continental Central Eurasia and on the Western Asian plateaux, with irradiations in the nemoral zone. The formations of the transition zone between the Mediterranean and Saharo-Sindian domaines, similar in appearance and floristically related to a varying degree, have been included in the Mediterranean steppes of 34.6. Sand steppes and salt steppes occurring within the range of the continental steppes of 34.9 are listed separately under 34.A and 15.A, respectively.
Elsődleges és másodlagos sztyeppek, melyeket nagyrészt középmagas vagy magas, évelő, hézagos talajborítást adó fűfélék és félcserjék, valamint az ezekhez kapcsolódó egyéves társulások alkotnak. Tipikus, két nyugalmi periódussal rendelkező, iráni-turáni eredetű fajokkal kiegészített formáik jellemző előfordulási helye Közép-Eurázsia kontinentális éghajlatú övezete és a nyugat-ázsiai fennsík sztyeppövezete, helyenként behatolva az erdőzónába. Hasonló felépítésű, bizonyos mértékben florisztikailag is rokon, bár általában csak egy nyugalmi periódussal rendelkező társulások találhatók a Mediterráneum és a Saharo-sindiai területek közötti átmeneti zónában; ezek leírása a Mediterrán sztyeppek között, a 34.6 kódszám alatt található. A 34.9 alatti kontinentális sztyeppek övezetében előforduló homoki puszták leírása a 34.A, a szikes pusztáké a 15.A kódszám alatt külön található.
