Western Palaearctic Scots pine forests

Forests of Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris and Pinus sylvestris ssp. hamata of the Nemoral and Mediterranean zones of western Eurasia and of their transitions to the Steppe zone. Included are, in particular, the forests of Scotland, of the Alpine system, of the Mediterranean peninsulas, of the lowlands of Central Europe, of the East European Nemoral zone and its adjacent wooded steppes, formed by Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris, as well as those of Anatolia, of the Caucacus and of Crimea, formed by Pinus sylvestris ssp. hamata. Excluded are the formations situated within the northern, non-Alpigenous, area of natural lowland occurrence of Picea abies, dominated by northern forms of Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris (var. septentrionalis, var. rigensis, var. borealis, var. rossica), and those dominated by Pinus sylvestris ssp. lapponica or by Pinus sylvestris ssp. sibirica, all of which are treated as constituents of the taiga and its transitions to the Nemoral and Steppe zones, and are listed under 42.C and 42.D. Also excluded are the forests formed by the Central Asian Pinus sylvestris ssp. kulundensis, listed under 42.E.

Nyugat-eurázsia lomberdő és mediterrán zónája és ennek a sztyeppzónával képzett átmenete Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris és Pinus sylvestris ssp. hamata erdei. Ide értendők elsősorban Skócia, az Alpok rendszere, a mediterrán félszigetek, a közép-európai síkságok, a kelet-európai lomberdő zóna és a kapcsolódó erdősstyepp területek Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris erdői és Anatólia, a Kaukázus és a Krím Pinus sylvestris ssp. hamata erdői egyaránt. Nem tartoznak ide azok az állományok, melyekben az északi Pinus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris (var. septentrionalis, var. rigensis, var. borealis, var. rossica), Pinus sylvestris ssp. lapponica vagy Pinus sylvestris ssp. sibirica dominál és a Picea abies északi, nem alpesi, természetes alföldi előfordulásának területén találhatók, ezek a tajga és annak a lomberdő és a sztyeppzóna felé képzett átmenetének tekintendők, és a 42.C és 42.D pontok alatt találhatók. Szintén nem ide tartoznak a közép-ázsiai Pinus sylvestris ssp. kulundensis alkotta erdők, melyek a 42.E pont alatt találhatók.
